The Script: Chicken Sandos, Tiaras, and the War In Between
A daughter’s betrayal causes a father to question what she loves more: her two dads or a Chicken Sandwich?
UPDATE: Yay, I found the link I was refering to below: Chick-fil-A Anti-Gay Controversy: Gay Employees Speak Out
Welps, honestly, this was scary because I had NO CLUE what to write about when I got up this morning. I remember the clock glowing back at me 5:45am and I knew I had 15 minutes before I had to think of something. I looked at a couple of prompts the night prior but none really spoke to me. Picking up my phone I went to check FB and saw a story about what’s happening with regards to Chick-Fil-A. For the record, I don’t agree with the president of that company.
I also remembered reading an article from somewhere (grrr… I really did try to find it), but it was about Gay teenagers working at a Chick-Fil-A. I really do need to find it so I can quote correctly, but I paraphrasing will have to do: in it one of the stories was about how customers would come in and praise the restaurant for being against “those” people. Made me sad… really sad to know that there are places like this in America where people can, for lack of a better word, hate other people belonging to a specific group.
But that was the genesis of this play, Chicken Sandos, Tiaras, and the War In Between. It was funny because I was set to begin this blog by refuting what I said in my previous blog about pre-naming any of my plays, especially since I thought I had the BEST TITLE EVER: CHICK-FIL-HEY! Luckily, I stuck with my process of after writing the first draft by saving my lunch hour for editing. And that time was spent over doing little tweaks and thinking up new titles. I’m pretty happy where I landed… and I’m pretty happy with the play. I’m slowly getting to the point where I’ve written a number of plays where I’m kinda getting to know my style: funny, characters who really listen to each other and make witty comments back to each other, have twist reveal (though I’ve been taught not really necessary), and have HEART. The plays that I’ve been the most proud of have these elements.
But the thing is, mostly about doing this exercise of 31 Plays in 31 Days, is that even though I “know” what my sweet spot is, I still have the opportunity to see if there are any other sweet spots I haven’t even tried to explore. And this format gives me that chance.
