Play 25: The Ultimate Revenge for a Man Named Stan – One of the NBA’s best players, Amadi Brooks, gets trapped in an elevator with one of his rabid twitter followers, Mojo510. Turns out that they have more in common than a shared experience in an elevator and a High School State Championship game – a man named Stan.
Well, #25 is in the books! I can’t believe I’ve come this far. BUT I do realize that I have so much more to go… well, six more. Which will be a good sight to see since school is coming up soon and I need to do a WHOLE lot of reading.
The Process:
Anyways, The Ultimate Revenge for a Man Named Stan, is another check off my “story” bucket list – a play that’s a little urban, hip hop, twisted with a revenge theme! It’s interesting how a play can take different turns from conception to completion. Let’s see: the play started with an image I had in my head about Pro Basketball players who wear their headphones while using Twitter. I guess then I had the question: What would happen if one of these basketball players were in a elevator with one of their twitter followers? What would they talk about? How can I up the stakes? I guess the easy choice is to have the follower be a stalker so she’d know where he is at all times… even in an elevator.
The story started going somewhere interesting when I stopped the elevator and added another reason for her to be “stalking” him. And then something funny happened as I took a break in the middle of this play, I started watching Kill Bill Vol. 1 on TV. I forgot how much I loved this movie! I’ve always wanted to write a story about Revenge! So I wanted the twist of the “cliche’d” storyline of this woman as a stalker for romantic intentions, I wanted her to have the motivation of making this Pro Baller pay for dropping her father as his agent when he took care of him while in high school.
Different. And got 10 pages too! Oh, and Stan is the song I imagined him listening too on his headphones as the play begins – a song about a person who feels scorned because his idol won’t respond to his fan mail, the initial place where I was going to take this play with the twitter follower and the Baller. Glad it didn’t go that way.
Anyways, Cheers! On to #26 tomorrow!
