Well, it looks like I’ve been pulling off Two-A-Days with these scripts! Totally crazy, yet, felt like I need to write these stories down.
Play 23: Breaking Mad – Gustavo leads a Group Therapy session with Flynn, Holly, and Badger into the causes of why they are not able to get Angry!
My homage to my FAVORITE Television Show: Breaking Bad! But I wanted to do something quirky with the title, hence Breaking Mad. The premise is based on the “false” notion I used to tell people about myself – I don’t get mad. Realistically, this can’t be true, but there was/is a phase when I would say that something in me is broken, because I’m not able to get as mad as other people. In a way, I still feel that way. At any rate, I wanted to try to imagine if there were other people who feel like that put to the extreme though and their session leader, GUSTAVO ;), teaches them how to unleash their inner Road Rager!
Play 24: Room at the Table – The parents of Lucas struggle with doing the right thing after a school does the wrong thing by emotionally and mentally bullies their child into thinking that he’s a bad person because of his eating habits. An immigrant tale.
I’ve been wanting to write about this subject for the last couple of years. Luckily, 31 Plays was the perfect opportunity to clean out my “story supply closet” and finally get something at least started – and let me emphasize STARTED! Quick synopsis: there’s this kid in Canada who was ridiculed by his teacher for eating uncivilized to the point where he had to transfer schools. He eventually sued, and won, his case against the teacher, principal, and school board. Here’s more info if you’d like. Anyways, I’ve thought about this for a very long time but never really knew how to dramatize this. So, with ROOM A THE TABLE, I set the play in motion after the kid has already transferred to another school and, after already being defeated by another commission, the parents argue whether or not to pursue any further legal action. I also chose to set this in Georgia. Nothing against the people there, I just wanted to put this in a more plausible American setting.
I came up with a 5 page play, but I know that there’s something deeper than just this play. And that’s a GREAT THING! Cuz if I never wrote anything about it, then there wouldn’t have even been a possibility to make this into something longer, greater, and important.
Almost to 31!!!!
