Can I write a comedy? That’s a good question. I know I can write something funny. Actually, that’s how I got hooked into being a playwright! From the first time that I heard the audience laugh at a scene I wrote of a Philippine Vendor taking out a “Soda in a Bag,” I was immediately HOOKED! I’ve eventually (hopefully) evolved to seeing an audience be moved in other ways, but I will always that “soda” moment as to why I keep writing. And I couldn’t be happier.
Anyways, like the decision to go to SFSU to pursue the MFA in Playwriting, I just want to learn how to get better at my craft. I’ve seen this fellowship opportunity with KML for years, but given that I have a little more time and that getting it would be the ONLY way I could afford to take these workshops, I had to at least TRY! Also being inspired by Oliver Saria’s INAY DALISAY’S WORLD FAMOUS LECHON, his play made me want to attempt to write a full-length comedy! I just wished I knew how!
In stepped this opportunity to learn with SF Premeire Sketch Comedy Troupe, Killing My Lobster! Also, I’ve been in tune with thinking of stories in the “full-length” mindset, it’d be a great get-away to start writing in the short form of sketches. I’m also really excited to hopefully make new friends!!!! It’s always great to get out of my comfort zones. I’ve always been such a big proponent of not learning by staying safe. So it’s great to take my own advice!
Cheers!
